About Us

About R3 Retreats

We're a small organization running structured retreat programs in central Alberta. Here's what we actually do, and why.

Our Background

How R3 Retreats started

R3 Retreats was established in 2016 by Marcus Webb, who had spent over a decade working in outdoor education and experiential learning. The name stands for Rest, Reflect, Reset — though we've moved away from that framing over time, because it implies an outcome that we can't reliably deliver.

The original premise was straightforward: most adults in professional environments don't have access to extended, well-supported time away from their usual pace. Not holidays — which tend to involve activity and stimulation of a different kind — but genuinely slower, more deliberate time. We wanted to create the conditions for that, in a place that was quiet enough to make it possible.

Since then, we've run programs for several hundred participants across our different formats, refined the structure based on what works, and built a small team of facilitators who understand what good retreat facilitation actually involves — primarily, getting out of the way.

01

No outcome promises

We don't tell people what they will feel or experience during or after a program. We describe what the experience involves and let people decide if that sounds useful for where they are.

02

Small groups

Programs run with between 6 and 12 participants by default. This is a deliberate choice — larger groups change the dynamic in ways that tend to undermine the quieter goals of a retreat.

03

Honest communication

If someone enquires and we don't think a program is appropriate for them right now, we say so. We'd rather someone return when the timing is right than participate in something that isn't suited to their situation.

04

Not therapy

None of our programs are clinical services. Our facilitators are not therapists. We are clear about this in every program description and during the intake process.

05

Simple environments

The retreat property is comfortable but not luxurious. We avoid over-designed, spa-like environments — not because we object to them, but because they tend to distract from the quieter purpose of a retreat.

06

Steady programming

We run programs year-round with a consistent structure. We don't respond to wellness trends by adding new formats. The programs are stable because the needs they address are stable.

The Location

Where we operate

R3 Retreats is based in Red Deer, Alberta. Programs take place at a property outside the city, within easy driving distance of Calgary and Edmonton.

The property

The retreat property sits on several acres of mixed woodland and open ground. It includes accommodation for up to 14 participants, communal dining and gathering spaces, and access to several kilometres of walking paths through adjacent forested land.

The site is not publicly visible, and we ask participants not to share the exact address on public channels — primarily to preserve the quiet environment for current guests.

Transport from Red Deer is arranged for participants who need it. Those arriving by car are given detailed directions at booking confirmation.

Seasons and conditions

Alberta's climate means meaningful variation across seasons. Winter programs run from November through March, with outdoor activities adapted to cold-weather conditions. Summer programs offer the most outdoor time. Spring and autumn programs are popular for the transitional light and landscape.

All programs run regardless of weather. Participants are advised in advance about what to pack for the season, and all necessary outdoor gear can be borrowed from the retreat.

Our Approach

"We can create conditions. We can't create outcomes."

That's the most honest summary of what retreat facilitation actually is. We offer a quiet location, a reasonable structure, a capable team, and good food. What participants do in that space — what they notice, what they think about, how they feel — is not something we produce or direct.

We think that clarity matters. It's easy for wellness businesses to overstate what they offer. We've tried to build something that doesn't do that.
